Plot: When a 12-year old girl is possessed by demons, a young priest takes it upon himself to selflessly save her at the behest of her famous movie-star mother.
I think the scariest parts in this movie was when the girl or thing...kept turning it's head around and also the part where the thing ran down the stairs in a back bend with blood streaming from her mouth...that was just freaky....and weird...most of it was just weird though
I COULDNT WATCH THIS MOVIE, besides the fact i was younger, i couldnt stand it, it scared me to death, i actually MADE myself close my eyes on some parts!, The scaryest part is when the girl is coming down the stairs UPSIDE DOWN....but, im sure if i watched it now, i would think irs freeking hilarious!!!
I'd have to say " The Exorcist" is one of the best horror films made to date.
It's brilliant, creepy, and keeps you interested. A must see for all horror lovers!
So scary it's good- it's pretty disturbing and morbid!I It has nasty language and just as disturbing sights! But is a great movie if you don't mind being scared!
A classic horror movie that may not be very scary in modern times, but must be appreciated for what it had to offer the viewers back in those days.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE FUCK THE PART WHERE SHE DOES THE SPIDER WALK SO COOL MY BROTHER CANT EVEN HEAR THE THEME SONG WITHOUT FREAKIN OUT
good movie i thought ti was pretty scary when i was younger![]()
and its about Based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist marries three different scenarios into one extraordinary plot. A visiting actress in Washington, D.C., notices dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest at nearby Georgetown University begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness. And, book-ending the story, a frail, elderly priest recognizes the necessity for a show-down with an old demonic enemy.
Forget religion,no political and social comments are surrogated though it.Friedkin's work of art is a haunting image of one's or more inclinations of evil.Goodness plays its part as well. And that's the terrifying approach...
i thought it was decent, but pretty laughable. Max Von Sydow was great as always, as was Ellen Burstyn. The performances made the film, but i feel bad for the girl who played the girl. I will say there were some legitimate scares here and there. i think you should see this film if you havent.
I mean... DO YOU REALLY THINK THIS IS SCARY?????? I'm serious, not even a kitten would get scared by this movie, it's a good story... that's for sure, but it wasn't usefull in this case.
The actors did not performanced well. It was more disgusting than scary, the beggining didn't had a very logicalrelation to the rest of the story, and I can say that actually Linda Blair didn't had a real role in this movie, because most of it were just effects.
The only part that could be memorable was the ending, when he jumped out the window for kill the demon... it's the only part I liked, the rest is just junk
I find it more than a little amusing when some young horror fan writes that he didn't find The Exorcist the least bit shocking or scary. Of course moviegoers today don't have the same visceral reaction, they're callused. And why are they callused? Because of groundbreaking films like The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Shock, horror and fright are emotions that can't be sustained without an ever-increasing amount of stimulus. Genre fans are like crack addicts, the dosage has to be continually increased in order to maintain the same high. It's a phenomenon most of us can relate to. Kids of my generation really didn't find Tod Browning's Dracula or James Whale's Frankenstein all that scary. We were building up an immunity of sorts. A resistance. A tolerance. The Exorcist was our new drug. It did what horror films were supposed to do, it served as a catalyst for that fantastic, exhilarating euphoria of being scared.
So go ahead kids, watch your Hostel (wince!) and your Wolf Creek (cringe!). I'm happy with my head-spinning, pea-soup-spitting, bed-levitating, she-did-WHAT-with-a-crucifix!? classic.
This is one of the best horror movies of all times. It was way too scary in the 80's and some real frightening scenes...
This movie still gives me nightmares if I watch even 5 minutes of it. Fo rme no horroe movies have topped it yet.
What a terrible movie. It's because of garbage like this that I very rarely watch horror movies.
For those that don't already know, this film talks about the demonic possession of an adolescent girl which requires an exorcism to be performed. While the plot is simple enough, the film tries its hardest to make in confusing. The first 15 minutes depict a priest, who is also an archaeologist, who we later find out has conveniently performed an exorcism, in Iraq. He discovers a coin which is shown at the end of the film but really has no significance at all. Perhaps a second viewing and this might make more sense, but as far as I can see, the first 15 minutes of this film are completely worthless. The next 20 minutes or so go all over the place and accomplish very little. Finally at about the 45 minute mark the girl starts behaving somewhat strangely. Even here nothing much happens and this is all a bunch of garbage. After an hour the plot begins.
The actual plot which takes an hour to begin is as bad as, if not worse than, the first hour. The girl has something wrong with her and we spend quite some time trying to figure out what to do. As this film is titled The Exorcist it's quite obvious that an exorcism is going to be performed. Overall, the plot is just dreadful.
The acting in this film isn't much better. The mother's mom, played by Ellen Burstyn is just terrible. Her performance is way over-the-top especially early on in the film when her daughter's problems appear to be rather minor. Her daughter, played by Linda Blair, doesn't really do much in the film. While she is the central character in the film, almost everything she does is just special effects and most of her dialogue is demonically-possessed being dubbed over by another actor. Basically all she does is spends the entire film strapped to a bed. The film has a bona-fide star in Lee J. Cobb, but his role isn't that significant and the side-story involving him is completely irrelevant.
The only good thing this film has is its special effects which were quite impressive for 1973. Most of this is just done for shock-value and these effects do nothing more than establish a new low for grotesque special effects. This effects were reasonably impressive at first, but became less so as the film progressed. The film seemed to rely on effects and nothing more and that's the recipe for a terrible movie.
While I suppose this could be scary to some viewers, I did not find it all that frightening. Since nothing all that unpredicted happens, the viewer isn't really startled by anything. The grotesque nature of the effects may scare young or squeamish viewers, but that's about it. In fact, I found this film almost comical since it portrayed a 12-year-old girl using quite a bit of profanity.
To continue my previous statement as to why I hate horror films, this film has 2 sequels and 2 prequels to run the franchise further into the ground. As this film is the "masterpiece" of the franchise I can't even begin to imagine how terrible the rest of the series is.
In short, this is just terrible and surpasses The Birth of a Nation as the worst film I've reviewed. The film has no redeeming qualities and should be avoided by all.

UP NEXT: Alfred Hitchcock's final film, Family Plot.
AAAHHHH! I was actually so scared of this movie. I laughed during The Shining, so it takes some pretty scary stuff to make me jump.
Okay. This movie was amazing. It was one of those movies that really gets you interested, and then you really just can't quit watching. Highly recommended.
I have always been drawn to watch religiously freaky movies. I don't know why, something about any kind of religion that seems to be a bit on the scarey side for me. Makes you wonder even SOMETIMES.
This movie however absolutley edge of your seat compellingly freaky.
The best and greatest horror film ever created.
I don't know but the religious ones seem to be the best of this genre for me.
Considering the year it was made, this was
God Damn scary and still is even more so after seeing the deleted footage re-released.
Most notably the scene where Regan is walking upside down, on all fours, down the stairs and blood pouring from her mouth. OMFG!
Being Agnostic I can take or leave this subject matter, but....GOD DAMN!
Best line (funniest anyway) in MHO....."Your mother sucks cocks in hell Karras"
The most shocking scene IMO is where Regan is stabbing her vagina with a crucifix while saying "Let Jesus fuck you"
*agape*
1973 people!
I really hate horror movies - and this is one of the only ones ive ever watched -- I hated every single minute of it...
One-Sentence Review:
"Defined the horror genre forever"
(The Exorcist has me absolutely, permanently traumatized. It isn't scary to me in a fun, roller coaster ride way. It's scary in a shortness-of- breath, cold sweat, unremitting insomnia, shaking hands, nauseated way. A Classic Horror Picture)
One of the scariest and most popular movies ever dared to come to theaters around the world. A respectable horror classic with a major dosis of terror, drama and suspense. Way ahead of its time. Hell yeah!!
98/100
this like psycho is another example of an overrated horror movie that you are done is scary only to find that not much really happens. a little girl having a pee in front of everyone and vomiting on a guy and saying "fuck me, fuck me" and "stick your cock up my ass" is not scary. it could have worked as comedy but as a horror movie it doesn't. also only two people are killed off and it's at the end. linda blair was funny but she probably wasn't intended to be. one good thing about this movie is, it's better than psycho but that is not saying much
Classic horror; one of the greatest of all time in my opinion. Still holds shock value 35 years on. Utterly unforgettable

My dad saw this 10 years ago and still won't talk about it, it scared him so much.
Now this is what you call a horror movie. The movies these days are so crappy and not scary at all like "Black Christmas" WTF?? If u want to see a real horror movie then watch this (if u dare), you'll definitely will like.
