Mix a bit of "Ju-On" horror, with a bit of "Mulholland Drive" mystery and twists, and you have this film. Even though it can't be considered an normal horror movie, with the normal thrilling scary moments and lots of gore, it still can chill the bone out of you sometimes.
Its a MUST SEE.
This film that Kim Kap-su (Bae Moo-hyeon/father) quoted "A beautiful horror film" (and can only agree) is one not to be missed. With a taste of M. Night Shyamalan's sixth sense and a combination of previous films based on the Korean folklore, Ji-woon Kim adds innovative finesse with a haunting score, some proper cinematography and a dominating cast that'll leave you intensified.
Synopsis: Bae Soo-yeon (Geun-yeong Mun) and Bae Soo-mi (Su-jeong Lim) are sent to a mental hospital after the intimate death of their mother. When released, they are welcomed by their wicked stepmother Eun-joo (Jung-ah Yum) only to find themselves wondering in a house full of tension amongst their father and an eerie paranormal that lurks about.

it's definitely a strange one. perhaps i'm giving it a below average rating because i've seen a few asian horror films lately and they always seem to have a ghost in them that's female with long dark hair. things were a little bit different here, not much... but i don't wanna spoil that for anyone reading this review. i thought it was shot beautifully as most asian cinema is. it relies heavily on imagery to tell its story much like kubrick's "2001: a space odyssey". maybe i'm just not a fan of this type of cinema. i think the main plot is ever so simple but made complicated by the story telling capabilities of kim jee-woon. in some ways it's almost its downfall, in others it makes for repeated viewing. the part that confused me was near the end of the film when everybody was in the house (set before anyone had died) and all the cast were there including the mother and the step-mother. i couldn't understand that without finding an online F.A.Q. for the movie. it was as simple as the father brought home his bit of stuff. that really should've been explained. although we're not all dumb we do like some things explained to us. the rest i understood! probably will watch it again and perhaps think more of it, but this is it for my first viewing. i'm not too impressed
Beautiful, Sad and Scary, was Kim Ji-woon's remit for this unique movie. It is all these things for sure, but it is much more than the sum of its (not inconsiderable) parts. There is moment, near the start of the movie where Jung-ah Yum, as the stepmother greets the sisters, she is all brittle bonhomie and clicking heels, and they react with open hatred and fear. You may think you know where this story is going, but believe me, you absolutely don?t. What follows, might just be, the most extraordinary cinematic experience of your life.
This is a movie so beautiful, it hurts your eyes.
It is sad, in a way you don?t expect and scary from a place you might not know existed.
Please. Go out now.
Find this movie and watch it. It really is that good.
I was soooo disappointed and confused till the very end!! The explanation was not clear at all and the whole point was very pointless.
I thought this is a scary movie but apparently I was completely wrong. It wasn't scary at all!!
And what bothered me the most was, what's the meaning of the closet full of the same clothing and the notebooks? I'm still confused to this day about it.
A confusing horror movie that's light on the gore but heavy on the tension pair that with some strong performances by the cast and a freaky step-mother and you have yourself a solid horror movie. If your into Korea's unique brand of horror you'll probably be into this one. See it before they remake it in early 2009 just so you can complain with the legions of other geeks.
No la clasificario como pelicula de terror solamente por que seria quitarle algo de merito (aunque si tiene bastante uso de ese genero). Tiene algunas fallas que se notan, pero los aciertos que tiene hacen que se le pueda perdonar.
this film was genius! excellent use of bright beautiful colors to enhance mood. Im Sun-yeong was perfect as Su-Mi, great acting! the twist near the end hit me hard, it got me confused. but then I started to get it. got to watch it twice to fully get it. great story.
Very well done. A beautiful story with gorgeous visuals and its own fair share of creepy moments, no fan of Asian horror will feel complete without having seen this movie. Very good.
This is a beautifully made film. Even though its a thriller, it was still very pretty to watch. This is the first Korean film I've seen. Thank you Hannah for sharing it with me. I love plots that are confusing and mysterious at first, but then everything falls together in the end. I also thought the cast of the film did an excellent job.
Perhaps good in the eyes of a psychological-horror fanatic, but I certainly didn't enjoy it at all. Extremely confusing and cut-up.

Although it's hindered by a drawn-out ending and rather slow beginning, it manages to both scare you and touch your soul at the same time. A beautiful movie.
Great movie! Not really what I would call a horror movie but there are parts of it that are just really unsettling.
the house and the surrounding area was beautiful but it held a creepy feel to it cuz you knew something was wrong in this house. the story kept my attention but it was a bit confusing keeping track of who was alive and who wasnt and when you finally piece it together the ending was really sad :( but it was a good watch none the less
One of the creepiest foreign films of all time! This great film will scare your soul away, and give you several heart attacks throughout.
88/100
Crafted with icy precision this Korean horror superbly brings to life the fears chikdren face when faced with a new step parent. Slightly tired of the Asian child horror genre now though.
Who's who, who's dead, who's alive, who's good, who's bad?? Freaky movie. May be a while before I look under the ktichen sink.
Wow the 2nd Mystery film from Korea I've seen and this one beats the hell out of all the Rings and Grudges, not only with the scares but also with the impressive story that surprised me in the end. Very effective mix of Mystery, Drama and Horror. One of the rare mystery films that I think would be interesting to watch a second time.
Now, that's my kind of movie. Mark my words.
PS: AHAHAHA vi no IMDB que já existe um remake preparado para 2009.
Not so scary, but a REALLY great movie! It's intelligent made and really enjoyable. Going to my favourites.
What a mind job. Not gonna lie, I'm still confused. I understand the core of the movie though, and it's good stuff.

The Asians are genius for this genre, but before see it be sure to have a high concentration skills, and if you have to see it two or three times, do it, you'll enjoy every time and new details wil be discovered for sure.
Hard to follow the first time, but do yourselves a favour and re-watch it again. It's a fabulous film.
